Spending credits that have been earned throughout various missions is now possible because of the technology upgrades available only in the single player campaign. You can spend these credits in two formats, basic and advanced. So although you can spend on items such as upgrades to buildings, infantry and vehicles, each item will have the two levels v guard gas geyser of upgrade. As an example, a basic upgrade for marines might be stimpacks, whereas an advanced upgrade will allow you to purchase combat shields. Not unlike other upgrades, the advanced set will cost substantially more than the basic options.
Using credits earned to hire mercenaries is another distinct possibility. You can do this through the mercenary agent console located in the Hyperion cantina. The more that you progress through the campaign, the more mercenary groups are made available for you. The great thing about this is that once you have hired mercenaries, they are always available to you when you construct a mercenary compound. Their use is limited however, to 3 or 4 times per battle, and they come in various formats. There is the four elite marines, or the two siege tanks, and others, and they all have their own unique set of upgrades of health and damage. To gain immediate control of your mercenaries you need to purchase them via the mercenary compound, using already acquired resources.
As mentioned earlier in this Starcraft single player campaign guide, there are currently three missions available. These are the “Welcome to the Jungle mission”, the “The Dig mission” and the “Whispers of Doom mission. ” With the “jungle” mission your role is to head down to a planet with a view to harvesting terrazine gas. This is done at the request of a Spectre with questionable motives. Starting the mission with a small slightly built up base, you will need to send out your SCV’s to harvest tanks that are full of gas from local geysers. This gas needs to then be bought back to the base. As always you will find the going tough with Protoss forces in the area, trying to cap all of the geysers to try and stop you getting that precious gas. The bottom line here is that when you capture seven full tanks you win! If the Protoss cap seven geysers – you lose!
The second mission, “The Dig” seems to be reported as the most enjoyable of the three. With this mission, you will eventually take control of a massive drilling laser, which when realigned to target an enormous Protoss vault which contains a sacred artifact. To avoid you stealing this relic, the Protoss are stationed all over the place and continuously send forces to try and stop your attempt to take the artifact. Your ability to turn the laser into a weapon could be your only chance to halt the advances of the Protoss forces.
The third mission is the “Whispers Of Doom” and this will be to some, the first time you have been able to actually control other races in the game. In this Starcraft single player campaign guide your focus to the fact that you have complete access to Zeratul’s void based powers.
